Proximion Showcases Dispersion Compensation Module Continuous Band (DCM-CB)

Solution offers low loss and channel plan independency - increasing performance and system flexibility

San Diego, California, February 25, 2008Proximion Fiber Systems AB, a world-class provider of Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) based Dispersion Compensation Modules (DCMs), announced today the demonstration of its DCM-CB for 40G bps at this year’s Optical Fiber Communication Conference and Exposition (OFC).

The DCM-CB covers the full continuous C-band and enables any channel plan, any bit rate and any modulation format and provides network operators with a low loss, non-existing latency solution. It increases performance and efficiency, making it suitable for transmission over mission critical networks.

Utilizing Proximion’s proprietary FBG design and manufacturing technology, the DCM-CB supports any channel plan and provides a small form factor compared to incumbent dispersion compensation technologies. The DCM-CB primarily addresses next-generation dense wave division multiplexing (DWDM) systems with increased transmission capacity which will benefit from the flexibility in channel spacing offered by the full C-band coverage.

“We are experiencing a paradigm shift where the system vendors are not only preparing for 40G bps at 50GHz channel spacing, but also applying new approaches when designing systems,” says Bengt Johansson, CTO at Proximion Fiber Systems AB. “Today’s market is moving to 40G bps systems and is looking for cost-effective solutions, such as the DCM-CB which contributes to lowering system cost. We also see an increased interest in minimizing the overall system latency, especially for storage and Ethernet applications, to improve the effective bandwidth.”

Realizing the unique features of the DCM-CB, system vendors are now designing systems utilizing novel amplification solutions to address the overall performance and cost. These novel amplifier solutions take full advantage of the DCM-CB’s absence of non-linearity effects and absence of latency in combination with the inherent low loss to optimize the amplification designs.

Proximion will showcase DCM-CB at OFC on February 26 – 28, Booth Number 3619.

Transmode Systems selects Proximion´s DCMs.

Proximion Fiber Systems AB delivers continuous band Dispersion Compensation Modules (DCM-CB) to Transmode Systems AB.

Stockholm, September 14, 2007

Proximion Fiber Systems AB announces that Transmode Systems AB has selected the DCM-CB, the next generation Dispersion Management solution utilizing Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) technology, for installations with the TM-series platform.

The contract was preceded by successful customer installations. Norrsken, a major regional operator in Sweden, selected Transmode for capacity upgrade and network expansion across Sweden. The deployment included Transmode’s highly successful 9x Gigabit Ethernet 10G Muxponder, the latest Double 10G Transponder, as well as the Proximion DCM-CB.

FBG based DCMs have several advantages over traditional dispersion compensating fibers (DCFs), the most obvious one being the low insertion loss. This enables system vendors to provide very cost effective optical networks. Proximion is delivering a channel plan independent and continuous full-band dispersion compensator designed for optical systems at 10 Gbit/s, 40 Gbit/s and above. Proximion and Transmode already have a history of joint efforts, e.g. a demonstration of a unique 10 Gbit/s network solution over 500 km fiber using Proximion’s ultra-low loss and continuous full-band DCMs at OFC/NFOEC 2006.

“We are pleased to be able to combine the Proximion DCM-CB with our TM-series platform” says Transmode´s CTO, Magnus Öberg. “Thanks to the low insertion loss we are able to create even more cost effective network solutions. We see an interesting potential for this kind of technology. “

“Proximion’s world-class FBG Technology is designed to meet the requirements of the most demanding optical networking applications in the most cost effective way. Our dispersion compensation product, DCM–CB, improves the cost effectiveness of optical transport systems by minimizing the need for amplification. The Proximion DCM-CB offers continuous dispersion compensation in the entire C-band making it channel spacing independent. At the same time the insertion loss is substantially lower than of traditional DCFs, says Proximion’s CEO, Stefan Ekman.”

Proximion and Acreo Demonstrate Full C-band fiber Bragg grating based DCMs in Long-Haul Optical Transport at 10 Gbps and 40 Gbps.

Successful demonstration of continuous C-band dispersion compensation by fiber Bragg gratings in an 820 km field trial at 10 Gbps and 40 Gbps line rates.

Stockholm, March 8, 2006

Proximion, the technology leader within design and manufacturing of fiber-Bragg gratings enabling low loss dispersion compensation, and Acreo, a leading Swedish research and development institute operating the Swedish National Broadband Test-bed, announced the successful demonstration of continuous C-band dispersion compensation by fiber Bragg gratings in 10/40Gbps optical transmission through 820 km of installed standard single-mode fiber.

The technology trial utilized a fiber link running from Kista in Stockholm to Hudiksvall, north of Stockholm, and back to Kista. Proximion’s dispersion compensation modules (DCMs) were plugged in to replace the majority of the dispersion compensating fibers that had been installed in the link. Low insertion loss of the DCMs enabled operation with fewer amplifiers and improved OSNR. Successful transmission of signals at both 10 Gbps and 40 Gbps was demonstrated.

“Lower insertion loss of the DCMs allowed greater flexibility in the design of the dispersion map compared with DCF based dispersion compensation. We were also able to by-pass amplifiers and to reduce the noise level”, said Acreo’s Jonas Mårtensson, the project leader for the field demonstration. “Optimization of the dispersion map and improved OSNR resulted in improved performance and at the same time as less number of components was used.”

“This trial confirms the viability of Proximion’s fibre Bragg grating technology for metro and longhaul optical transport”, said Proximion’s CEO, Stefan Ekman . “Proximion’s dispersion compensation products improve the cost-effectiveness of optical transport by minimizing the need for amplification. Proximion’s products offer continuous dispersion compensation in the entire C-band making them channel spacing independent. At the same time the insertion loss is substantially lower then for traditional DCFs”.

“We were pleased to participate in Acreo’s test bed and greatly appreciated the opportunity to generate new data” said Pär Johanson, Director of Marketing and Sales at Proximion. ”Acreo’s test bed is an opportunity for us to demonstrate our products in an infrastructure which enables future broadband services.”

“We believe that fiber Bragg grating technology offers essential advantages compared with traditional DCFs. This field trial shows that the technology now is ready for deployment”, stated Acreo’s Jonas Mårtensson.

Proximion exhibits until March 9th at the Optical Fiber Communication Conference, OFC ’06 in Anaheim, California. The DCM product line and a live transmission demonstration are on display in Proximion’s booth (#2584).

Proximion's breakthrough!

Dispersion Compensation Module ready for sampling

Proximion’s Dispersion Compensation Module (DCM) represents the next step in dispersion management. The obvious strengths of Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) based DCMs are low loss, low non-linear effects, and small size, while Dispersion Compensating Fiber (DCF) based solutions have the advantage of full band and channel plan independent compensation. Proximion’s DCM is the first product to combine the best out of two worlds.

This breakthrough is enabled by Proximion’s recent advances in FBG manufacturing allowing automated writing of more than six meter long FBGs with nanometer precision. The excellent control of the writing process over the whole length of the grating ensures very low levels of group delay ripple over the full wavelength range.

Proximion’s DCM is the perfect choice for system and amplifier designs. The low loss enables a higher degree of freedom when optimizing a system with respect to performance and cost. The fact that Proximion’s DCM has full slope compensation and is much less prone to distortion through non-linear effects compared to DCF based DCMs, makes it future proof regarding developments towards higher bit rates and higher channel counts.

Proximion’s FBG based DCM is fully compatible with today’s DCF based DCMs. Being completely passive and small in size, it can immediately replace DCF based solutions without compromises. Proximion’s versatile FBG manufacturing facility further allows for very precise tailoring the properties of the DCM. DCM modules for different kinds of fiber and span lengths are therefore readily designed.

Please, contact Proximion if you have an interest in integrating our technology into your applications.
